Yesterday I ended up in a conversation about knitting in class. All of the people I was talking to, sans one, was against it. And some quite aggressively. They claimed it was distracting, that they disliked the noise and something else I believe. Now, the other knitter there said, quite sensibly, "if it bothers you when we knit in class then tell us" to which the response was "nah, I much rather give you evil glares". At that point I thought the conversation was turning rather stupid. First of all, because if you don't do anything about it, and talking counts here, then the world is not going to change. Sorry, but we are not mind readers and we can not simply figure out what you dislike if you don't tell us.

Secondly and more importantly, tell me why I should care that you don't like it? There are tons of people who do things on this campus that I find distracting and/or irritating, people who play loud music at 1 am, people who steal my soap, people who stand smoking right outside the class buildings when you have five minutes to class and have to walk though the smoke (this seems to be worse in Seelye than the science quad), people who smoke right before class and thus come into class stinking of smoke, people who recline their seats on planes, people who whine over every single little thing, people who refuse to do something and instead just whine about things, people who talk trash about your friends when you are there... The list goes on. Do I give these people evil stares and or tell them I hate what they are doing? Nope. I suck it up and count the minutes until I can get away from these people.

And that's my recommendation, if you are bothered by knitters, Suck It Up, there are worse things you could be bothered by.

I've gotten to the point where I literally cannot pay attention in class unless I am doing something completely different with my hands. Knitting is it. The end.

I've had more people come up to me and say "YOU MUST SHOW ME HOW TO USE DOUBLE POINTED NEEDLES" than be annoyed by it, by a factor of about... 10 to 0. Approximately.

I don't spin in class because people have frequently told me that it's hypnotic, and I have watched this myself. But I'm certainly not going to stop knitting in class unless someone tells me that it's annoying them, at which point I will decide if my knitting is more important than their annoyance.

I find it annoying, but not annoying enough to actually, you know, care. But those girls were definitely really aggressive in an unproductive way.
